A Quick Note On Prices For Built-In Grills
Built-in grills are inherently expensive – and it makes sense if you think about why. These grills are meant to be permanently installed into a cabinet, and the last thing you want is something that will need to be replaced after only a couple of years.
Most built-in grill brands put quite a bit of thoughtfulness into the design, build, and construction materials used to create their cookers. And those costs add up!
So with that in mind, built-in grills are more or less in two different pricing tiers. The first “value” tier includes price points from $1,000 to $3,000 for a grill. These grills are typically quite well made and come with a reasonable amount of features.
For the second “luxury grill” tier, you are probably looking at $4,000 up to $10,000 for your grill. These grills typically are made in the USA, come with lifetime warranties, and are loaded with high-end features.
Best Built-In Gas Grills – Our Top Picks
Here we’ll take a look at our favorite built-in grills, with multiple options all across the price spectrum.
Alfresco AXLE 42-Inch Built-In Gas Grill

To kick off our reviews of the best built-in grills, we couldn’t go without sharing with you a premium luxury choice. The Alfresco ALXE 42 Inch is a really neat option and it certainly doesn’t come cheap but we think you will find it’s well worth the price if it within your range for an option suitable to your needs.
This grill has a lot of features. For the size, the cooking area seems a little reduced at 770 square inches. We’re not sure if this takes into account additional cooking space like the warming rack and rotisserie space. Either way, it’s still a decent amount of cooking space. It’s back up by 82,500 BTUs which is pretty significant for the size.
The rotisserie system is integrated and yet hidden. It can support a massive load of up to 120 pounds of meat at one time. That’s quite a lot of meat! The control panel is actually cooled with air so it doesn’t get hot to the touch and the heat doesn’t affect the panel. It’s lit by amber backlighting that is LED as well.
This has a special smoker burner that has 5,000 BTUs to itself. It allows you to add smoker flavor to your food. You can even infuse it with herbs and such as well for flavor. The hood has a spring-assist system so it opens and shuts easily.
The cooking grids are rolled stainless steel. They are built to be heavy-duty and they produce awesome results with even and consistent heat. This is an American-made grill which is another factor that makes it stand out in our book. It comes with a grill cover so you can protect it when not in use.

The Lynx Professional Series, from a pure quality standpoint, would be our choice for the best overall option for built-in gas grills. It’s large and it is a luxury grill that won’t lead you astray. The downside of this grill is that it’s on the more expensive side since it is a high-end grill but we believe it’s well worth every penny it costs to purchase it.
This is a natural gas grill but it could be converted to propane if necessary. This is a stainless steel grill from a reliable grilling brand that is known for their quality grills at affordable prices.
The Summit S-460 has the style of a freestanding grill with a built-in cabinet underneath but it is designed to be built-in to a space. It doesn’t have wheels or casters but is stationary, it just has the benefit of cabinet space built into it.
This is a stainless steel grill that can be purchased as either natural gas or propane. It’s very sleek and nice and super easy to work with. It has 4 stainless steel burners covering a cooking area of 580 square inches. It includes the rotisserie kit and the infrared sear burner as well.
The ignition is a snap-jet individual ignition system so you can individually light and control the burners as needed. You get a total of 48,800 BTUs for the space, which is slightly lower than some of the competition but still plenty sufficient for most needs.

Bull Lonestar Select Drop-In Grill Head
This grill from Bull is a really great choice that costs a bit less than some of the options out there. It’s well-made and has a mix and match of high-end qualities and traditional qualities that really make it worth a review. You can purchase it in either natural gas or propane as well.
The Lonestar 87049 has a dual-lighting system. This system lights and controls 4 stainless steel bar burners. While these aren’t quite as fancy as ceramic briquettes, they do help to distribute heat evenly and consistently over the cooking grid. There are also igniters on every valve so you can control the burners individually to your needs.
This grill has a unique integration called ReliaBULL flame tamers as well. This technology has been shown to improve the heat distribution by up to 50% compared to other similar grills. These tamers primarily work to eliminate hot and cold spots throughout the grilling area. Every part of your surface grills the way it should. This means no matter how full your surface is it all cooks the same.
The cooking area measures 810 square inches, which is pretty significant for the 31-inch build. This also comes with the smoker box so you can enjoy smoked flavor in your grilling practices. The grill operates on 60,000 BTUs, which is good for the space.
This grill also has a pretty good warranty on it. You get a 5-year warranty on the burners and a lifetime warranty on the grates and the fire box. The lifetime warranty is a good indicator of the overall quality of the grill. The twin lighting system does require a plug-in so be sure to plan for that when you’re preparing your grill space.

Best Built-In Gas Grills – Buying Tips
We’ve shared with you complete reviews of the 10 best built-in grills on the market. There’s a good range of high-end, premium, and traditional models here to give you a variety of choices. We can share grills with you all day long but in the end, it’s up to you to determine which will be best for your needs.
There are some specific things we recommend that you consider as you try to make a choice for your new grill. In this section, we will provide you with our tips and things to look for as you narrow down your built-in grill options.
Fuel Source
Before you get too far setting up your built-in grill space and choosing a grill, you will want to be aware of your fuel source. If you intend to use a natural gas source, you should have a professional help set that up initially. If you already have that set up, you’re in a good place!
Natural gas is the most common fuel source for built-in grills. You will find that many of them come that way originally. However, most grills can be converted to propane so if that is your fuel of choice, be sure to look for that functionality. If you need a conversion kit, check to make sure it is possible and whether or not you will have to purchase a kit.
It would be awful if you purchase a built-in grill and couldn’t install it because you have the wrong fuel source or failed to realize you need a conversion kit.
Cutout Size
Grills come in tons of different sizes. You can purchase small sizes (sometimes as small as 18 inches!). The most common small size for built-in grills is about 24 inches but it is possible to find them smaller.
On the other side of that coin, you can find them quite large as well. 42 inches is a common extra-large grill size and you don’t often see them bigger than that. However, it is possible to find them so or have them custom-made as well.
We recommend planning your space before you order or planning your space around the grill that you decide. You want to ensure that the grill will fit your space appropriately. It may be wise to choose a grill before you build the space, unless the space already exists. Just be sure that you choose a grill that fits the space!
Aesthetic
Consider the look you are going for in your outdoor kitchen – what kind of backsplash do you want? What does the design of the rest of your patio look like?
It’s important to be diligent in this area because after all, a built-in grill is quite the endeavor – you will spend lots of time and/or money to get your set up installed, so be sure to put thought into the look beforehand.
Cooking Area
There is a lot of information that can go into choosing the right cooking area. For one, you need to plan what you will be using this grill for. Will you be hosting parties and having gatherings? Do you anticipate feeding a lot of people or cooking a lot at one time?
Maybe you’re a retired grilling expert who just cooks for your small family. Whatever your needs are, there is a grill to meet your needs. The larger the cooking area, the larger the grill is likely to be.
At the same time, you will want to be sure that your cooking area is sufficient for your needs. It can be hard to know just how much cooking area you need. Start by determining how many you will typically be cooking for. If you cook for gatherings a lot, go with a larger cooking area!
An average household of about 4-5 people can usually be served by a cooking space of only 400-500 square inches. This is usually plenty and could actually potentially even be enough for up to 6 or even 8 servings.
If you have a large family or do a lot of entertaining, we recommend that you don’t settle for any less than 600 square inches.
Often, you do pay more for more cooking space. The thing is, you don’t want to run out of space or have to cook in shifts if you can avoid it. Go ahead and spend the few extra dollars to get yourself the right amount of space.
Power
Next, consider the power. The power of grills is typically measured in BTUs. High-end grills always have a higher level of BTUs for their cooking space. The higher the level of BTUs, the more power the grill is emitting through the burners.
The BTU is a unit of measurement known as the British Thermal Unit. It measures heat output as well as fuel consumption per hour. This measurement is directly related to the burners and the heat they emit.
BTU is sometimes referred to as fuel-efficiency, which is a good way to understand the concept ultimately. More BTU does not necessarily mean more heat but rather the capability of the heat for the space. If you have infrared or searing abilities, the BTU output is important. With infrared, you actually don’t need as much BTU.
The rule of thumb is that a good grill will have at least 80 BTUs per square inch of cooking space. That means a grill that is 500 square inches in cooking space should have at least 40,000 BTUs as well.
This can be important because there are grills out there that operate on lower BTUs and you might be disappointed with the cooking and heating time because of this.
All of the grills we’ve listed here have plenty of BTUs for their associated spaces. This is still something you will want to keep in mind. You might also want to consider whether infrared burners and rotisserie burners have their own BTU measurements or not.
Budget
As you consider your built-in grill, you will definitely need to know your budget. You can see from our reference table that there are multiple price points for these grills. Some high-end grills have pretty high price tags. On the same note, you can purchase more affordable grills if you need to and they often have similar functionality.
You don’t have to spend $5,000 to purchase a high-end grill if your budget doesn’t allow for it. Choose a grill that fits your budget. Budget-friendly grills can also be well-made. Some of the cooking features and functions may vary slightly but it doesn’t mean you aren’t getting a quality grill.
Every grill we’ve shared here is highly-rated. While some are more affordable, they are still high-quality choices that you can be proud to own. No one will ever know you bought a budget grill when you use options like these!
Features
Finally, as you consider your built-in grill options, consider what features you just can’t live without. You may decide that you absolutely must have a searing burner or a rotisserie burner. That’s perfectly ok! Most built-in grills (at least the ones we’ve shared) have the rotisserie option. There are some you have to purchase the kit separately.
Do you want your built-in grill to have ceramic briquettes or are you ok with other burner designs? Ceramic briquettes do typically cost more so be prepared to pay for that feature.
Then, there are things like LED backlighting and lights inside of the grill. Not every grill has either of these so you will need to decide if they are important to you.
Some other features you may want to consider is a thermometer, a cooking probe for your meat, a cover, a spring-assist lid, a warming rack, and the ignition system.
These are all just things to prioritize and consider as far as what you want or prefer in your new grill.
Built-In Grills vs Freestanding Grills
If you’re wondering whether it is truly worth it to go for a built-in grill surface rather than a freestanding grill, we have some comparison information for you.
These grills are similar as far as functionality but different by design. What you should use or go for could definitely vary based on your needs. Not everyone has an ideal space to build an island to fit a built-in grill. At the same time, not everyone has a budget to set up this space as well.
Built-in grills are very nice and they are commonly high-end grill designs. Not always but the majority of built-in grills have common features like the rotisserie kit that are known in high-end grills.
Freestanding grills are on a cart that can be moved inside or outside. The cart often has storage space and shelving on it. Interestingly enough, freestanding grills are often more affordable than built-in grills but remember that built-in grills tend to have premium features almost every time.
One is not necessarily better than the other. You simply should be aware that they are different. This guide is directed specifically towards built-in grills. Built-in grills require a supporting space to be functional while freestanding grills do not.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Does a Built-in Grill Cost?
A built-in grill can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $3,500. Some high-end models can cost as much as $10,000. The final amount is going to be determined by multiple factors.
The first factor concerns the style and design of the grill, are you looking to invest in a drop-in, or roll-in grill? If you are likely to opt for a roll-in grill, you will have the additional expense of paying for a surround.
Again, the prices here can vary but they typically fall within the range of $2,000 to $3,500. In some cases, you may be lucky enough to get your hands on a surround that retails towards the lower end of the price range.
If you are likely to opt for a drop-in grill, you will be faced with the cost of the stonework that is going to surround it. More often than not, stonework is more costly than a surround and is likely to cost double if not more.
Of course, this figure will depend on the quality of the materials that are used and the layout and size of your grill.
Typically, you will find that the cost of the grill is a reflection of its durability. If you want your grill to see you through a considerable number of uses, it is worth spending a little more on it.
Does Weber Make a Built-in Grill?
Weber produces two grills that are designed to be built in and these are the Summit S-460 and the Summit S-660. Both of these grills are available in natural gas and propane varieties. These grills have been specially designed and incorporate the necessary ventilation elements that are required of a built-in grill.
Attempting to build in a Weber grill that is not intended for this purpose may lead to issues with your warranty and it will likely become void. As such, if you encounter any issues from this point forward, your warranty will no longer cover them.
Can I Use a Regular Grill for a Built-in?
Yes, it is possible to use a regular grill for a built-in, however, there are a few factors that you will need to assess before attempting to do so.
Some regular grills are designed with extending sides that can be used to store your foods or condiments when you are cooking. When they are not in use, they can then be folded. If this design applies to your grill you will need to remove them before installing it.
Also, if your grill is covered by a warranty it is important to check the terms of your policy as they will confirm whether your warranty is still going to be valid if you attempt to build in your regular grill.
What is the Best Month to Buy a Grill?
The best months to invest in a new grill tend to be June, July, and September. Depending on the brand you may also discover sales and promotional discounts at different times throughout the year.
During the months when the weather starts to warm up, grills tend to retail at a lower price because this is when the majority of people are likely to start using their grill.

It is important to be cautious when deciding where to place your gas grill. It should be at least ten feet away from any structure or building that can catch fire.
Aside from this, you will need to make sure that your grill is located away from dry vegetation and plants that could catch fire should they come into contact with any flying debris. You also should avoid placing your grill near trees with low branches as there is an increased risk of them touching the grill.
Furthermore, if your garden has a decked area or railings, you should make sure that your grill is placed away from these features.
