Are High End Gas Grills Really Worth the Money?

Before we get started, let’s talk about the cost of high end gas grills and whether or not they are truly worth the cost. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “you get what you pay for”, this is a classic example of that scenario.

High end gas grills cost more because they typically have more to offer. They have additional functionality, they are made with the very best materials, and they are designed to be a long-term investment.  And much of the time, they’re covered (at least in part) by a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.

High end grills are something special and while they can cost a pretty penny, it’s important to understand what makes them so valuable. We’ve picked out a few features to highlight to let you know just why they cost more.

Do you have to spend that much money on a grill? Well, not necessarily. You can get good grills for less but high end grills are truly the best. These are made to last as long as you want them to last and when you make the investment, you will notice the difference.

Burners

One of the most prominent features that make a difference for high end gas grills are the burners. The burners are simply better overall.

High end gas grills have high-quality burners. You can get exact control of your temperature and it remains consistent and reliable with every use. High end gas grill burners are designed with materials that shouldn’t rust anytime soon.

These grills have more BTUs per burner, which means more power behind the heat. With this type of power, control, and consistency, you can get perfection every single time.

Functionality

High end gas grills typically have functionality that exceeds that of many traditional grills. You might find non-high end grills with similar functionality but they aren’t really designed to do it all.

High end grills have the functionality and they are built to handle all of the various tasks and cooking methods at a high level as well.

With high end gas grills, you typically have the ability to switch between various cooking options. You might have indirect cooking options, a built-in rotisserie, wood chip smoking options, side burners, infrared technology, and more.

You get better controls and better lighting overall and the grills look amazing.

There is the main grilling area and a separated smaller space. These can be used together or apart and you even have rotisserie space in each section.

There are 2 lids so you can work with whatever section you are in. Then, there are the side tables and the side burners included in the tables. This grill offers 1,430 square inches of cooking space. It can be set up as propane or natural gas.

The wheels on this one are made to make moving it around as simple as possible. The square-inch cooking area is supported with 123,000 BTUs, which is some major power! There are 6 stainless steel main burners.

Pros:

  • Multi-functional grill with a lot of capability
  • Can be natural gas or propane
  • 123,000 BTUs for the cooking space
  • Lighted LED knobs

Cons:

  • The cabinets are not as nice as the rest of the grill

Overall, we’re disappointed that the cabinets look cheap when compared to the value of the rest of the grill. But if we’re being honest, the cabinets are not the most important aspect. The grill delivers great quality where it counts and has a lot of functionality.

TEC Sterling Patio 2FR Infrared Gas Grill

Infrared grilling has become an extremely popular way to cook food – it has some great benefits.  Infrared heaters heat food directly via infrared waves, compared to traditional gas burners that heat the air inside your grill, which in turn heats your food.

This might sound only like a technicality, but there’s a big practical difference in the grilling experience.  Infrared grills don’t have flare ups and cook with virtually perfect consistency every time.

TEC invented infrared grilling over 40 years ago, and their products have stood the test of time.  Their flagship grill nowadays is the Sterling Patio 2FR Infrared Gas Grill, and it’s easily the best high end infrared gas grill on the market in our eyes..  It has 592 square inches of cooking surface area, and only needs 2 burners to properly heat the whole unit.  The two burners are so powerful that they can achieve 900ºF temperatures with ease.

TEC Grills are made in the USA and feature an extremely high level of craftsmanship.  They are definitely on the higher end of the price spectrum, but worth the investment if your heart is set on an infrared gas grill.  They have a smaller 1 burner option too, and each size of grill comes in a freestanding or built-in configuration.

Fire Magic Echelon Diamond Series E660S

This gas grill from Fire Magic is well deserving of a spot in our countdown. It’s smaller than the first grill we shared but it packs a lot of power in the package and is still plenty large to get things done. This one is more mobile-friendly with the size and design.

The cooking space on this grill measures 1,080 square inches, giving you lots of room to work with. The side tables are very nice as well to give you an extra burner and lots of working space so you can comfortably work and move things as needed for the grill.

This grill offers 96,000 BTU for the cooking space, which is outstanding. It’s known for its power and might. This grill looks great with its quality stainless steel materials. It has a high-torque motor, three burners, a charcoal/smoker basket, a rotisserie spit, and even comes with meat forks.

The shelves fold down for storage purposes. The digital thermometer covers four zones and you have hot surface ignition as well. The halogen lights are very nice for seeing what you are doing and this grill is made in the USA. It’s a stand out model that also comes in a built-in series.

Pros:

  • Compact but powerful
  • 1,080 square inches of cooking space
  • Sleek design
  • Folding side tables as well as storage compartments
  • Made in the USA
  • Multiple cooking options

Cons:

  • They have had inventory issues as of late

We love this grill because it’s long-lasting and looks great. It offers a lot of cooking space in a compact design, making it a great space-saver. The construction is top-notch and you have tons of cooking options and plenty of power to back it up.

Coyote Centaur 50-Inch Dual Fuel Grill

We vote the Coyote Centaur Dual Fuel Grill to be the best dual-fuel grill option on the market. It’s quite unique in the way it is designed. Coyote is a known high end grill brand and this particular option surely has a lot to offer.

This grill lets you enjoy charcoal flavor and the convenience of gas, all in one simple grill. It is a built-in grill but you can find the same grill in other options as well. The grill is built to be sturdy and durable. It is made with continuously welded steel. The edges are sleek and polished so it always looks great.

This grill has an extensive cooking space but doesn’t have quite as much power as some of the others. The cooking space is 1,200 square inches. The burners operate at 40,000 BTU but remember that there is dual fuel so the charcoal will contribute to the cooking temperatures and not as much power is needed.

If you’ve never operated with a dual-fuel grill, it may take some getting used to in order to get the charcoal and burner temperatures coordinating appropriately. This is a dual-lid grill that makes it easier to work with just a section or open the lids as needed.

Check out our full article of Coyote Grill reviews here.

Pros:

  • Dual fuel option that uses propane and charcoal
  • Sturdy stainless steel materials
  • 1200 square inches of cooking space
  • Made with high-performance burners
  • Double lid feature for convenience

Cons:

  • May require a learning curve for the dual fuel features

We love this grill because it is unique and well-made. It is absolutely well-made with strong and sturdy materials. If you like charcoal but prefer the ease of working with gas, this is the grill for you. It comes in both a built-in option and a freestanding option and it is pretty fun compared to the other traditional gas grills.

Lynx Sedona Propane Gas Grill L600PS

Check Price on BBQ Guys

We couldn’t finish up our reviews without covering the Lynx Sedona L600PS gas grill. This is a 36-inch gas grill so it’s another compact option but it’s pretty great and full of features.

This grill has three stainless steel burners and the power is controllable to your needs. The levels can reach up to 69,000 BTUs. This grill offers 891 square inches of cooking space so it is a pretty great setup if you don’t want something huge and it has plenty of power for its size.

The Sedona heats evenly and consistently. It uses heated briquettes, which helps to make the heat consistent and reduce the likelihood of hot or cold spots in problem areas on the grill. The grill has seamless welds and is made with heavy-duty materials that will hold up for you.

The grill is super easy to use and lights with direct spark ignition. You can use the grill in any weather, it even has battery backup. There is a halogen light so you can see what you’re doing and the controls are blue-lit as well to add a little visual appeal.

Pros:

  • Compact and powerful
  • Sturdy, seamless welds
  • Freestanding grill with simple features
  • Heated with ceramic briquettes
  • 891 square inches of cooking space

Cons:

  • No extra features like side burners or rotisserie settings

We like this grill because it is simple and yet effective. It’s a nice grill with high-quality materials and it’s built to last. It gives you all of the reliability you need with a high end grill but doesn’t have as many special features as some of the options out there.

This is the best built-in grill on the market, in our opinion. You can get this grill as a built-in or traditional model but we wanted to highlight the built-in on this particular option. It’s sleek and stylish and offers you just the perfect grill setting for any surroundings.

This grill is built to be an outdoor grill. It is made with heavy-duty stainless steel materials. The burners are stainless steel and titanium. This grill screams quality and durability with ever little characteristic.

The Alfresco ALXE combines ceramic briquettes with cooking grates to bring you the absolute best in overall temperature. There are no more hot or cold spots in your cooking area. The panels are infused with cool touch safety as well.

This grill is a bit smaller overall compared to some of the other grills we see here today. It has only about 770 square inches of cooking space and it heats with 82,500 BTUs. This is still a large space and powerful BTU for the space.

  • 700 square inches with 82,500 BTUs
  • Multiple cooking functions
  • Rotisserie system has its own ceramic burner
  • Includes an integrated smoking system

Don’t let the reduced price fool you. This grill is designed to last a long time and is made with durable, high-quality materials. It has a 10-year warranty on all parts, which gives some indication as to the integrity of the structure.

This grill doesn’t have quite as much power as some of the others but it does pack a good punch for the size. The grill is 844 square inches but only has about 69,000 BTUs, which is less than its competitors overall.

The grill has 4 stainless steel burners and is on a cart that is simple and easy to move with casters and rolling wheels. The cooking grates are cast iron with porcelain enamel. This grill retains heat well and is designed quite nicely overall.

If you’re looking for an affordable high end grill, this one is a really great option. It sets apart from cheaper grills in many ways and is completely reliable and durable as well.

A Buyer’s Guide for Choosing a High End Grill

We’ve shared some really great grill options for you here. These options are highly-rated across the board and were carefully selected to provide you with the very best grills to choose from. But how do you choose from here?

It’s been narrowed down to our 7 best high end gas grills but there’s still a decision to be made! We’ve got you covered here as well. We’ve put together this buyer’s guide to try to help you make an informed decision.

We plan to provide you with the tools and some features that you may want to be aware of or consider before you make a final decision on your high end grill.

Configuration

First things first, what kind of configuration are you looking for? What we really want you to consider here is whether you want a built-in gas grill or a freestanding gas grill. This all depends on your preferences.

What does your grill space look like? Do you have a structure for a built-in gas grill or are you planning to build a structure? Built-in gas grills are placed into an island or an outdoor setting of some sort.

If you plan to build something, be sure to plan for the appropriate dimensions. If you are installing a grill into an island or area that is already built, then be sure to know what size you need. You certainly don’t want to purchase a built-in grill that won’t fit into the setting prepared for it.

Freestanding grills are exactly what the name suggests. These are typically placed into a cart of some sort and most of the carts have casters or wheels so you can move them around as needed. These carts usually also have storage areas and a space for the propane tank.

What is nice is these are totally mobile and they typically have their own sort of island. This includes things like side trays to give you extra space. They also typically have other features like additional burners built into the side trays.

One grill is not necessarily better than the other here. It’s a matter of preference and what your space will accommodate. There are a lot of pros for each configuration here.

Grill Size

Size is potentially one of the most important aspects of choosing your grill. You need to know what size is best for your needs and what size will fit your space. You can find small, medium, large, and extra-large grill spaces and this is just something to be aware of.

Obviously, the larger the cooking space, the more you can cook on the space. Grills that are under 26 inches are great for small families when you don’t need as much cooking space. If you have a large family or want a larger cooking space, we recommend sizing up.

Keep in mind that the grill size is directly proportionate to how much you can cook on the grill. Larger grills typically have more burners and more power for the cooking space.

What grill size you need is again a matter of preference but we want you to consider what you need as far as grill sizes go and be sure you get the right size for your needs.

Burners & BTUs

You will also want to be aware of the power behind your grill. Not every grill is powered the same and they really don’t have to be. What you do want to know is whether or not the grill offers enough power to handle the square inches and the burners.

The typical recommendation is that your grill has 75-100 BTUs per square inch of cooking space. Keep in mind, grills that use dual fuel options don’t need as high of BTUs because they are not operating on gas alone.

Knowing these numbers might help you decide, particularly on a high end grill. These grills are typically far more powerful than traditional grills anyway but you certainly want to know that you’re getting power for the price.

Type of Fuel

When it comes to gas grills, there is more than one type of gas. You can find propane gas or natural gas setups. Both of these cook the same but the way you set them up or place them will not be the same.

Propane is much more portable than natural gas because it doesn’t require a line for hook up. The prices are typically comparable. You can typically convert from propane to natural gas or the other way around.

If you do already use one and decide to convert, be sure to bring in an expert to help with the process. Changing these lines should be done by someone who is licensed for the task. Natural gas lines do require hookups and are not portable in the same manner that propane is.

If you have natural gas lines already set up, it’s easy to just use natural gas again. Natural gas is most common with built-in grills but it can be used for freestanding grills as well. The plus to natural gas is you never run out of fuel like you can with propane.

If you don’t have natural gas lines, propane is typically a better option because it is more affordable than setting up a line. Yes, you do have to refill or exchange propane tanks but the mobility and functionality are greatly improved.

Features

Finally, on the list of things that are important to be mindful of, be aware of the features and know whether or not they are important to you.

High end grills typically have more features than traditional grills. You will find that some features are common and some features are not found on every grill. Here are a few things that you may want to consider in your choices.

  • Fuel features
  • Temperature control knobs (blue lighting is common)
  • Ceramic briquettes
  • Halogen lighting
  • Rotisserie features
  • Smoking capabilities
  • Infrared burners

The halogen lights and the lit control knobs are pretty common amongst high end grills. These are a standard feature. If a grill doesn’t have them, it doesn’t mean it’s not any good but the standard features are important to be aware of.

A lot of high end grills allow you to use smoking features, although this is not standard. It’s something you may want to consider. Ceramic briquettes are also not necessarily standard but they are certainly functional to have and can really help to evenly spread heat so you don’t have hot or cold spots.

These features are simply things to be aware of. If you’re going to spend the money on a high end grill, you are entitled to some special features that are nice to have. Determine just what you want as far as features are concerned.

Remember that not all of these are a guarantee but if something is particularly important to you then you may want to be sure you choose a grill that offers it. The nice thing is, you can choose what you want or don’t want. There are plenty of options out there.

Our Thoughts on the Best High End Gas Grills

When it comes down to it, we have a clear cut winner. The Mont Alpi is one of the most highly-rated high end grills out there. This grill is absolutely stunning. It is large and it is well-designed. This grill can be used as a free-standing option and can even be built-into a space.

It is durable and well-made and gives you the best features of a high end grill for a reasonable price point. This grill offers a lot in terms of functionality. The side tables have faux granite, which is awesome. You get the lights and tons of cooking space and power.

Our runner-up made a close call. If the Mont Alpi is just too large for you, the Fire Magic Echelon makes a good option as well (read our full resource on Fire Magic Grills here). This one is more compact but there is something to be said about small but mighty with this grill.

This one has a charcoal or smoke basket so you can have versatility if you want it and get that charcoal or smoked flavor. The design is sleek and nice and then, of course, you get those blue-lit knobs and the halogen lighting with this grill as well.
